Somalis are among the most intelligent, empathetic, and loyal cat breeds. Somalis need to be around people but tend toward independent behavior. Somalis can usually get along with other cats.

All Somalis and Abyssinians are descended from one kitten named Zulu that a soldier brought to England from Alexandria, Egypt. Somalis are prone to dental problems from excessive inbreeding. Somalis shed less than most long haired cats.
